Who are these Step-On Guides we keep hearing about?
Some of you may recognize my name from calling the office or from me responding to emails. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Katie Dorgan and I am the Receptive Tour Coordinator here at Target Tours. The Receptive what?… believe me I was just as puzzled when I first heard the title.
Receptive Tours (sometimes referred to as Inbound Tours) are tours that come to the Maritimes, where our business is located, instead of Retail Tours (sometimes referred to Outbound Tours) where we send Maritimers away to fun and exciting destinations. The majority of the time Receptive Tours include Step-On Guides. Let me share a little bit about my role here and what Step-on Guides mean to the touring world.
My role with Target Tours has many branches but the most significant branch is working with tour companies from Canada, the United States and even international companies who are visiting the Maritime Provinces. I help them create itineraries for their passengers and book Step-On Guides in different locations throughout the Maritimes. The role of a Step-On Guide is to join a group at a designated location and “step on” the coach to provide guided commentary of the sights, locations, and history of a local place. They then leave the group and the company continues on with its itinerary. Step-On Guides are full of knowledge about the area and can help you find the best-kept places and local secrets.
Our team is made up of local guides from across the Maritimes. Above you will find our team of Prince Edward Island Guides visiting the Anne of Green Gables Museum in Park Corner. Our guides come from all walks of life and love being ambassadors of Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton, Saint John and other regions across the Maritimes. Whether guides were born here or moved here, they each share a passion of where they come from, a wealth of knowledge about their respective destination, and exude down-home Maritime Hospitality.
Step-On Guides are here to enhance your visit to your destination. They are the local experts. They may only be with you for a few hours or they may join you for multi-day excursions. Either way, they are happy to share anecdotes, facts and so much more that will certainly enhance your visit.
While writing this I was inspired to reach out to our guides and ask what it is about Step-on Guiding that they love so much. The following are their answers!
“I am a history buff and while Charlottetown is a small city, it does have many interesting stories to share with tourists. I enjoy the questions and interactions with tourists. As a retired teacher, this is a rewarding way to spend some time in our beautiful province.”
–Lucille, Prince Edward Island
“Being a Step-On Guide is all about being an ambassador of PEI. I love showing off our beautiful Island to visitors and telling them about what we have to offer.”
– Corinne, Prince Edward Island
“I became a PEI Tour Guide because I love people and I wanted to be part of their Island experiences.”
– Elizabeth, Prince Edward Island
“The chance to welcome visitors to our Island. Every tour is a new challenge and myriad of questions from people all over the world. Different itineraries keep the tours interesting and challenge our knowledge of Prince Edward Island. My job is perfect in retirement.”
– Walter, Prince Edward Island
“Having travelled to many countries around the world, I appreciate the unique and special place PEI is to live. Having the opportunity to show visitors how wonderful the Island is and have so much fun by doing it is a dream job.”
– Leah-Jane, Prince Edward Island
“I have been blessed to travel to many beautiful and amazing places, but I am always awed by the beauty of Prince Edward Island when I return home.”
– Janice, Prince Edward Island
