Lynn and I have just returned from our Iceland Cruise Tour on Windstar Cruises. This has always been on the top of our must-see countries to visit, and we were not disappointed.

When we started offering this tour, we were concerned that the recent volcanic eruption might stop people travelling—and boy, were we wrong! It had no effect other than providing a great picture from the plane as we landed.

We can’t cover everything we saw—we could go on for days—but we will try and give our top 5 sights!

1. Geysir Hot Spring – A favorite stop along the Golden Circle is the highly active Geysir Hot Spring Area with boiling mud pits and exploding geysers. A favorite is lively Strokkur geyser, which spouts water 30 metres (100 ft) into the air every few minutes. The ground itself is bubbling hot.

2. Godafoss Waterfalls – Godafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods,” is one of Iceland’s most iconic natural treasures, situated in the northeastern region of the country. Steeped in both beauty and history, it forms an integral part of Skjalfandafljot, the fourth-largest river in Iceland. Godafoss cascades over a curved edge, spanning approximately 100 feet (30 meters) in width and plummeting 39 feet (12 meters) down into a serene and picturesque pool.

3. The Námafjall Geothermal Area – At this area, also known as Hverir, you will see many smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulphur crystals of many different colours. This sulphur gives the area an overwhelming smell of egg. The soil in the area has little vegetation due to the acidity caused by these geothermal processes.

4. Artic Fox – While visiting the abandoned community of Hesteyri, Lynn came across this little fellow on the beach. As Iceland’s only native mammal, this creature has been both a blessing and a curse on the local population, often pinching chickens, young lambs and even burrowing its way into human parlours. All the while, its fur and meat have provided warmth and sustenance in times of overbearing difficulty.

5. Scenic landscapes – There is beauty everywhere you look. From lava fields to the farmlands in the valleys. You will be hard pressed to take a bad picture.

Bonus Pictures:

Sunset at sea – I love sunsets. Especially the sunsets at sea. I was able capture this one just before it disappeared into the horizon.

Do you have any other cruises coming up that allow embarkation in Halifax?

Hi Wanda! At the moment, the only tour with an embarkation from Halifax is our Greenland & Iceland Cruise. We have flights from Halifax for all our other tours.
